About Christo Brand
Christo Brand’s life journey took him from a humble upbringing on a farm in South Africa to a remarkable role as Nelson Mandela’s prison guard and later his confidant. Brand’s story embodies themes of resilience, mutual trust, and reconciliation, offering profound lessons about overcoming adversity and fostering understanding in divided societies.
From his early days on a farm called "Goedvertrouw," Christo grew up navigating the realities of apartheid-era South Africa. He began his career in the prison service at 19 and was assigned to Robben Island, where he first met Nelson Mandela. Over the years, their relationship evolved into one of deep mutual respect. Following Mandela's release, Christo continued to work in roles dedicated to South Africa’s transformation and storytelling, sharing his extraordinary experiences with audiences around the world.
Panelist Biography: Clarence “Reggie” Williams
Clarence “Reggie” Williams has been the Vice President of Advancement at Hallmark University since 2016. With a distinguished career in the United States Air Force, leadership roles at USAA and the San Antonio Area Foundation, and extensive community involvement, Williams is deeply committed to education and service. His numerous accolades, including the Alamo Chamber of Commerce’s Lifetime Achievement Award, highlight his contributions to fostering community development and leadership.
Moderator Biography: Commissioner Tommy Calvert
Commissioner Tommy Calvert, the youngest and first African-American Bexar County Commissioner for Precinct 4, has transformed his community through innovative programs and strategic investments. Elected in 2014 and reelected for a second term, Calvert has focused on economic development, education, housing, and cultural preservation. His leadership has created jobs, preserved critical infrastructure, and supported community growth.
