We promise an innovative and fun evening to honor our local leaders. Since 1985, the World Affairs Council has honored an individual who has significantly contributed to San Antonio’s growth as an international city. On March 24, 2021, the Council will honor and recognize Dr. Larry S. Schlesinger, President and CEO of Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio. Featuring Harvard University's Dr. Barry Bloom as the Keynote Speaker. Larry S. Schlesinger, MD is an internationally recognized authority in infectious diseases. He became Professor, President and CEO of Texas Biomedical Research Institute in 2017, and is leading a transformational strategic plan. Since his arrival, Texas Biomed has added 13 new faculty members, raised more than $30 million and restructured leadership and business practices, doubling grants and contracts between 2019 and 2020. A leading physician scientist and a prolific scholar, Dr. Schlesinger has been funded for more than 30 years by the NIH and other agencies and private foundations, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He is a recent NIH NIAID Council member, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Infectious Diseases Society of America, Association of American Physicians and American Academy of Microbiology.
A leading scientist in the areas of infectious diseases, vaccines, and global health and former consultant to the White House, Dr. Barry Bloom continues to pursue an active interest in bench science as the principal investigator of a laboratory researching the immune response to tuberculosis, a disease that claims more than two million lives each year. Please join us in honoring Dr. Schlesinger and his commitment to San Antonio’s place in the world.
